Australian Adventure Travel proudly present:

ART IN THE DESERT
May 1 – 3, 2004 and October 30 – November 1, 2004
(Private safaris also available on request for conference
delegates, clubs or groups)
A major feature of the 2003 Perth International Arts
Festival was “Inside Australia”- a weird, wonderful and highly controversial
artwork situated over 750 kms from Perth.
Comprising 51 abstract steel structures, the figures
stand like lonely sentinels in a seven sq. km. desolate salt lake west of
the old mining town of Menzies. Created by British artist Antony Gormley,
the sculptures have attracted international acclaim. They are destined to
become one of Australia’s leading artistic attractions and an icon of
outback WA.
The artwork is an amazing sight, but because it is in
such a remote area, it is difficult to reach. Global Gypsies & Australian
Adventure Travel are offering an exciting three-day safari package to visit
these fabulous but inaccessible sculptures. You travel in the comfort of an
air-conditioned safari vehicle escorted by a professional Safari Guide and
support staff. You’ll enjoy complimentary sundowners overlooking the
sculptures and a special white-linen, candlelight dinner next to the lake!
The safari will take place while the moon is full to provide optimum viewing
and the best possible back-to-nature experience.
Itinerary
DAY 1
Meet at the Wellington Street tourist bus ramp in Perth
at 6:45 a.m. sharp. After boarding your air-conditioned 4WD tour coach, we
will be joined by an arts expert from the Perth International Arts Festival
who will give us a private lecture about the sculptures.
We’ll then set out along the Great Eastern Highway
travelling over the Darling Range to the town of Northam, break here for
morning tea and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and home made cake. We follow
the Kalgoorlie pipeline, which was, and still is, the lifeline for the towns
and farms of the inland wheat belt region of WA. One of these towns is
Southern Cross, where we stop for a picnic lunch in a park. After lunch we
travel through gold mining towns to our first overnight camp at Kalgoorlie.
Overnight at Prospector Caravan Park, Kalgoorlie
Lunch/Dinner
DAY 2
After a night’s rest we tour the town of Kalgoorlie,
viewing the “Super Pit” (a giant open cut gold mine some 500 metres in
depth) and the museum of the goldmines. After lunch we travel to the old
town of Menzies where some of the locals posed nude for Antony Gormley’s
extra ordinary artwork. We then travel out to Lake Ballard for our first
look at the sculptures. We enjoy sundowners as we watch the sun slowly set
over this remarkable artistic creation.
The evening meal features white linen tablecloths and is
served by candlelight beneath a a star-filled sky. Take a spectacular
“moonwalk” through the sculptures at full moon.
Overnight at Lake Ballard Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner
DAY 3

the sculptures. We then pack up camp and travel back to Perth arriving
approximately 7pm that night.
